ECSU hosts 12th Annual Back 2 School Bash and Food Drive for K-12 Students

Elizabeth City State University (ECSU) is hosting its Back 2 School Bash and Food Drive for K-12 students from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m., Aug. 27 in the campus’ R.L. Vaughan Center. ECSU’s radio station, WRVS 89.9, is organizing the event with several partners, to provide free school supplies, bookbags, food and other offerings for the community. Children must be present to take home supplies.

Last year, over 650 community members received free school supplies and educational resources. Additionally, 220 pounds of food and 200 meals were donated to the Food Bank of Albemarle to help fight food insecurity in the state. Alongside the more than 25 vendors onsite, face painting, haircuts, immunizations and a performance by The ECSU Sound of Class are part of this year’s event. COVID-19 testing, dental screenings and general health screenings will also be available.

“The Back 2 School Bash supports K-12 students and their families in our community, with the services and supplies they need for a positive, productive and healthy school year,” said Melba Smith, director of radio and television services at ECSU and an event organizer.

Attendees are encouraged to bring a non-perishable food donation to support the Food Bank of Albemarle. Or, in lieu of canned or boxed goods, donations can be made here. Every $1 equals approximately four meals.

In addition to WRVS 89.9, W18BB-TV, ECSU, the Elizabeth City Police Department, and Elizabeth City-Pasquotank County Parks & Recreation are event partners.
